Stewart Casier Highway to Stewart and Hyder

Loaded up the bikes and headed off down the Stewart-Cassier Highway. Was quite scenic.

We met a couple from Texas at one rest area who were push biking from Alaska to the bottom of South America. They were taking 3 years to do it. They weren't enjoying the headwind they were battling and said it would probably halve the kms for the day. We took a side trip to Boya Lake. Was ok. May have had a swim if it had been a nicer day

.A few kms down the road we stopped and put our wet weather gear on. Good call. It became cold and wet. Stopped at Dearse Lake and had a coffee and got gas. 80km down road we arrive at Red Goat Lodge where we are staying the night. Nice place on a lake.

Mitch the owner is a bit of a charachter. He and Marty had some good banter going on. Thursday 4th Woke up to overcast sky and fog. Put wet weather gear on just in case and by jingos did we need it. First 150 miles all in rain. Stopped at Meziadin Junction for gas and coffee. As always we had fellow bikers to chat to. Rain had stopped which was great as we had a beautiful scenic ride to Stewart and Hyder. The mountains and glaciers were stunning.

Royal Canadian Moose

We saw 4 black bears along the roadside which was great. We stopped briefly in
Stewart including a visit to the info centre then headed off to our accomodation in Hyder which happens to be back in Alaska. Unloaded our gear then rode up to the Salmon Glacier. This was very impressive.

No one was allowed to go to the face of the glacier because some blasting was being done in the area but the security guard said we could go as far as marker 45 but if anyone stopped us don't say he let us go. He said if we turned at marker 39 we could get down to the glacier but Marty thought he said that was where the road was washed out so we didn't go. I was right. Haha

Came back into town and went for tea at the Glacier View Inn. Was very yummy. Maree and I also got hydralised there. 150 proof rum.

From there we went to the bear viewing area.

We were lucky enough to see a black bear come down to the river to fish for salmon.

Perfect end to the day.

Lovely ride back out to Junction 37.

Now we have two days of just riding so we can get to Jasper and Banff.
